How to Get Court Records
The Unicoi County court website posts a current General Sessions criminal docket, court forms, contact details, and a link to a state search. There is no public viewer for document images. A posted docket tells you the case exists, but the complaint, motion, order, or judgment itself usually has to come from the clerk. Ask at the counter, by phone, mail, email, or fax. Just confirm the channel and payment method with the office first.
- Identify the court division, case number and year, party or caption, and exact document.
- Check the posted docket or Unicoi County case search channels to confirm the case identifier.
- Call the proper clerk to confirm custody, availability, copy type, fee, and accepted payment.
- Inspect the file at the courthouse or send a focused mail, email, or fax request.
- State whether a plain, certified, or exemplified copy is needed and confirm delivery terms.
Transcripts are different. Contact the court reporter directly for those. No Unicoi reporter directory or transcript rate is published, and the clerk does not hold the reporter's transcript.
Two Unicoi County Clerks
Two clerks, two record desks. Darren C. Shelton, the Unicoi County Circuit Court Clerk, keeps Circuit, Criminal, General Sessions, Juvenile, Probate, and Traffic records, per the county court site. Chancery files belong to Teresa W. Simerly, the Clerk and Master. A third office comes up often in searches: Patty Treadway, the elected County Clerk. Her office handles marriage, vehicle, notary, business, and county-minute services. It is not the main trial-court record office.
| Office | Records | Contact |
|---|---|---|
| Circuit Court Clerk | Circuit, Criminal, General Sessions, Juvenile, Probate, Traffic | (423) 743-3541; uccourtclerk@gmail.com |
| Clerk and Master | Chancery, including equity and listed domestic, property, tax, and related matters | (423) 743-9541; unicoichancery@gmail.com |
| Municipal clerk | Erwin or Unicoi city ordinance and municipal traffic matters | Contact the issuing city |
The clerk contact page lists the details you need for any county record request.

The office details tie several court divisions to one records desk. Chancery stays with the Clerk and Master.
Types of Court Records
A docket is one piece, not the whole record. The local PDF works as a calendar-style list. The clerk's case file holds the papers parties filed and the orders the court entered. Need one ruling? Ask for that named item rather than every document in the file.
- Docket sheets and chronological case entries
- Complaints, petitions, indictments, answers, and motions
- Summonses, subpoenas, notices, and service returns
- Signed orders, judgments, and disposition records
- Public exhibits and post-judgment papers such as garnishment or writ filings
- Probate and estate records maintained through the proper local division
The county forms index shows a blank form exists. It does not put a filled-in copy from a specific case online. A filed version still has to come from its custodian.
Docket List or Full File
Myth: opening the current docket opens the whole court record. Fact: the General Sessions PDF shows a date, judge, number, parties or roles, charges, and hearing notes. It does not link each pleading, order, judgment, exhibit, or account ledger.
A free web PDF is not a certified copy either. Certification is the clerk's authentication, and another court or agency may require it. For personal review or tracking your own case, a plain copy is often enough. Say which copy type you want at the start. That way the quote and the production method match the request.
Note: A docket entry can locate a document. It does not replace the signed document kept in the official Unicoi County court file.
What a Court Record Contains
What's inside depends on case type and access rules. A General Sessions criminal number like 86GS1-2025-CR-87210 ties the docket entry to the right file. No official code legend is published. So keep the full number handy when ordering.
| Case number | The court-assigned identifier used for routing and retrieval. |
|---|---|
| Caption and parties | The formal case style and public party-role information. |
| Pleadings | Complaints, petitions, answers, motions, or an indictment as the case requires. |
| Docket entries | A chronological index of filings, settings, and court action. |
| Orders and judgments | Signed rulings, final judgments, or disposition papers that control over a short docket note. |
| Service and exhibits | Returns, attachments, and public exhibits retained in the file. |
A public copy may omit confidential identifiers or protected material. If only part of a document is restricted, ask for a redacted public version.
Probate Records at the Courthouse
Probate hearings generally land on Monday or Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. A hearing expected to run past one hour needs approval. The local page says that approval comes from the Circuit Court Clerk. A schedule tells you when a matter may be called. It will not show the estate file itself. That file can hold petitions, inventories, orders, notices, and other papers.
The official probate page gives the local setting and estate context.

The posted probate information helps a requester pick the right division. That comes in handy before asking for an estate document or certified order.
Certified Copies and Fees
Know your copy types. A plain copy reproduces a public paper. A certified copy bears the clerk's authentication. An exemplified copy adds authentication when the receiving body demands it. The official site links court-cost and probate-fee PDFs, but exact copy, certification, exemplification, search, postage, and per-document amounts are not stated. Guessing at those figures is a mistake; ask the office.
| Item | Published amount | What to do |

| Plain copy | Not located | Ask for the current per-page quote |
| Certified copy | Not located | Name the exact document and ask for certification cost |
| Exemplified copy | Not located | Confirm whether the receiving body requires it |
| Search or archive work | Not located | Ask whether staff time or retrieval charges apply |
| Mail and postage | Not located | Confirm total and payment method before mailing funds |

Writing a Specific Request
Unicoi County has no dedicated certified-copy or public-record request form. A clear letter or email should give your name, phone or email, court division, case number, filing year, caption, the exact paper or date range, and the copy type you want. Add a Tennessee address if residency proof is requested. Say whether you seek inspection or copies, and how the record should be delivered.
For mail, include a return address, but ask first where payment belongs. Hold back sensitive data unless staff require it. The Circuit Clerk lists fax (423) 743-1118. The Clerk and Master lists fax (423) 735-1636. Confirm fax acceptance before relying on it. Tennessee's public-record framework demands enough detail for the custodian to identify the record. Yet it never forces staff to build a new compilation or answer a broad research question.
Public Access and Sealed Records
Two rules govern who can see a Tennessee court file. Tennessee Supreme Court Rule 34 sets out the baseline for public access to court records. Tennessee Public Records Act guidance walks through how to ask for inspection or copies. Access has limits, though. A record can be public in status yet still carry redactions on particular pages. So open does not mean unfiltered.
Key access limits: sealed or expunged files, juvenile records, protected adoption and family material, confidential personal identifiers, judicial drafts, and records made confidential by law may be withheld or redacted. The local Juvenile Court page says the court is closed and documentation is limited to parties and attorneys of record.
What if the file is not ready right away? Tennessee guidance gives the office-holder three options: produce the record, deny it in writing, or state a reasonable production time, all within seven business days. That deadline governs the response only. A big archive copy job can lawfully run past the seventh business day.
Older Unicoi County Records
Unicoi County publishes no fixed online cutoff for older court records. There is no posted retention schedule, archive address, or microfilm range either. Digging into an older case may send staff to paper files, bound docket books, the current case-management system, or offsite storage. So give them a narrow date range and the exact division. Mention any known appeal or transfer too. An old case sometimes carries linked trial and appellate case numbers.
Is the page count a mystery? Inspecting the file at the courthouse often beats ordering copies blind. Circuit Clerk hours run weekdays from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Clerk and Master posts 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. There is a lunch closure. Call ahead for an archived file, restricted material, or a large copy order.
